Snapchat disclosed yesterday that it was the victim of a phishing scam that led to hackers gaining access to payroll information for some of its employees, including their social security numbers, bank details, and salaries.
The L.A.-based social media company explained in a blog post, “One of our employees fell for a phishing scam and revealed some payroll information about our employees. The good news is that our servers were not breached, and our users’ data was totally unaffected by this. The bad news is that a number of our employees have now had their identity compromised. And for that, we’re just impossibly sorry.”
The memo went on to explain that the incident had been reported to the FBI, and that Snapchat plans to “redouble our already rigorous training programs around privacy and security in the coming weeks. Our hope is that we never have to write a blog post like this again.”
This isn’t the first breach for Snapchat, which got into hot water in 2015, when almost five million user names were posted online. In 2014, over 200,000 user photos were compromised due to unsecure third-party apps.
