Electronic Frontier Foundation Slams Tech Firms for Barring Neo-Nazis

A digital rights group based in San Francisco on Thursday criticised several Internet companies for removing neo-Nazi groups from servers and services, saying the actions were “dangerous” and threatened free expression online.

GoDaddy, Alphabet’s Google, security firm Cloudflareand other technology companies moved this week to block hate groups after weekend violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white nationalists had gathered to protest removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a park.

“We strongly believe that what GoDaddy, Google, and Cloudflare did here was dangerous,” Cindy Cohn, executive director of Electronic Frontier Foundation, wrote in a blog post along with two other staffers.

The blog post reflected years-long tension in Silicon Valley, where many company executives want to distance themselves from extremists but are concerned that picking and choosing what is acceptable on their platforms could invite more regulation from governments.

“Protecting free speech is not something we do because we agree with all of the speech that gets protected,” Electronic Frontier Foundation wrote.

“We do it because the power to decide who gets to speak and who doesn’t is just too dangerous to hand to any company or any government.”

The group called on companies that manage internet domain names, including Google and GoDaddy, to “draw a hard line” and not suspend or impair domain names “based on expressive content of websites or services.”

The blog post echoed concerns expressed by Cloudflare chief executive Matthew Prince, who on Wendnesday said he decided to drop coverage of neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer but said that his decision was conflicted.

Prince told Reuters he “wholeheartedly agreed” with the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s post and said he was hopeful it would help spark a more thoughtful debate about internet regulation.

Google and GoDaddy did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the blog made outside normal business hours.

The Daily Stormer helped organise the protest in Charlottesville, at which a 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 people were injured when a vehicle drove into counter-protesters. The website cheered the woman’s death.

It was removed from GoDaddy and Google Domains after they said they would not serve the website.

SteamOS vs. Ubuntu vs. Windows 10: Which Is The Best Operating System For Gaming?

operating systems for gaming

Short Bytes: Several operating systems have been developed for a broad range of purposes, but, currently, there are only three best operating systems for gaming: SteamOS, Ubuntu and Windows 10. Naturally, all three will have varied gaming performance between them, and it is our job to provide you with accurate information on which OS to use if your primary usage will be for long gaming sessions. At the end of the day, it will also come down to the user’s preference.

Years ago, MS-DOS was the ‘go to’ operating system when you wanted to engage in prolonged gaming sessions but its complexity required that a better alternative should be provided to the masses that will also feature a unique interface for easy use. After years of development, several new variations of platforms came that have been designed for gaming purposes.

We have the ever-popular Windows 10, SteamOS, and, of course, Ubuntu. All three of these operating systems will require you to have proper gaming hardware if you wish to play popular gaming titles, but which one has been properly optimized and which is the best operating system for gaming? Let us find out:

SteamOS vs. Ubuntu vs. Windows 10: Gaming performance

For the past decade, gaming on Windows was the only viable option left for users because there was a lack of support for Linux, but that trend is slowly changing now. That is thanks to the increased support through Valve and SteamOS, which have resurrected the importance of Linux.

Even Ars Technica decided to perform their series of tests to show that Windows 10 was not the only OS you needed to comfortably game using other alternatives.

The review comprised up of a Steam machine using the most recent version of SteamOS. Firing up the benchmarks to find out the best operating system for gaming, there was a hope that results would not be in favor of Windows 10 but that was not to be.

While you can engage in increased gaming sessions on a machine that is running SteamOS, it is safe to say that both SteamOS and Ubuntu are not able to keep up with Microsoft’s latest operating system despite the developmental leaps that have taken place in the past few years.

If you are going to be playing modern-day gaming titles and want the best performance possible while running decent-grade hardware, it is safe to say that Windows 10 is going to offer the best possible performance. However, that does not make Linux any useless. Keep in mind that these benchmarks were being run at a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

It is 2017 and we know for a fact that there are millions of gamers that still cling onto their 1080p monitor because either their hardware is not powerful enough to render high frame rates at higher resolutions, or it is possible that they want the highest possible performance while running expensive hardware since upgrading gaming monitors is not the highest priority for everyone.

Getting playable frame rates at resolutions higher than 1080p is very impressive given the fact that a couple of years back, no one would have bothered to look at Linux as a viable platform for gaming purposes.

A portion of why you see these performance gains is because it is possible that Valve is focusing on the Vulkan API. Vulkan reduces the overhead on the graphics processor and other resources to deliver increased performance in gaming titles, even on systems that are not running the best of hardware components.

Windows 10 remains the top-performer of the leaderboards for gaming performance but Linux is playing catch-up at a tremendous pace

If you want to game, Windows 10 currently remains the best choice over Linux and SteamOS. While there is no competition with Microsoft’s latest operating system, we should not ignore the fact that Linux has made some tremendous gains in a brief period.

With over a thousand titles available for Linux through Steam, you’re getting a massive number of options that you never knew existed a couple of years back. If you feel that unconditional love towards Linux, we will continue to encourage you to provide your undying support for the operating system, even though we are the bearer of bad news that you will currently experience performance drops when comparing it to Windows 10.

Steam will continue to support Linux as we’ve seen on previous occasions, but other hardware companies should also lend a helping hand. This will include the likes of Intel, AMD, NVIDIA and others which control the driver stack.

If it took decades for Linux to improve heavily, then we should not ruin your expectations a tad bit because it will take several more years to further reduce that performance gap between Windows 10 and the latter. However, the fact that Linux is getting there should mean that Microsoft has something to worry.

If you have something to add to this story on the best operating system for gaming, drop your thoughts and feedback.

Web Design: Native, Hybrid or Responsive, What Format Is Made For Your Mobile Application

Native, hybrid or responsive: what format to choose to make your mobile users live a successful experience. We take stock!

At some point, when designing your mobile application, you will have to decide on how you will develop the application. Your choices include native applications, hybrid applications and responsive websites and the decision you make will affect the end product. Learning to make the right decision requires understanding how each type of development works and how it affects the end product.

There are three main options for creating a mobile app. You can create a native application, a hybrid application, or create a responsive mobile website that offers similar functionality to an application. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, and it is important to understand them in detail before embarking on a particular development path.

What is a Native App?

A native application is designed to run on a particular mobile operating system. It will not work on other mobile operating systems. So, for example, if you were developing a native application for iOS, you would do it on Swift.

The biggest benefits for native applications are that they can typically easily access all the features of the selected device and are more likely, if properly developed, to run without error on the device.

However, this involves a compromise. A native application cannot be run on a device that does not use the same operating system. This means that if you want your application to run on Windows, iOS 7 and Android, you will need to develop the application three times, once for each operating system. This can make the development process slower and more costly.

Many companies will develop their application for a single operating system when choosing the native route. If the application succeeds in this environment, it will go back and recreate it for other operating systems. It should be noted that at present, iOS 7 applications are more cost effective than applications running in other environments.

What is a Hybrid App?

A hybrid application is designed to work on multiple platforms. It is written using only one standard code language (such as C # or a combination of HTML5 and Javascript) and compiled to run on each platform. Device-specific interactions will usually be handled through the use of plugins for that operating system.

Recommended for YouWebcast, August 29th: How to 8x Your SEO Traffic With These 3 Power Hacks

The biggest advantage of hybrid applications is that they allow the support of several operating systems at a more economical price than the development of several native applications. Users, as long as the development runs smoothly, will not normally be able to distinguish whether an application is native or hybrid. In fact, users, in general, do not care about how your application is developed, they just care about whether it works on their device and does what they expect to do.

There are disadvantages for the development of hybrid applications. It can present serious challenges if the application requires a complex interaction of the device. Effectively, there is a limit to what plugins can achieve on this aspect. The support costs of a hybrid application may be higher than the support costs of a native application.

What is a Responsive Website?

A responsive web site can provide functionality similar to an application. In fact, with a little creativity, you can minimize the differences and make sure that the home page is displayed directly in full-screen mode.
Responsive websites will be developed using HTML 5 and Javascript. As a general rule, developers will adopt a “mobile first” approach to developing the mobile version offering a simpler and less expensive experience compared to the desktop version of the same site.

The main disadvantages of using responsive websites are that the application cannot be distributed via an application store; this can be bad for your business if you are looking to monetize your app downloads. Second, there is the problem that the user will need constant connectivity to use the site. This may not be a problem in highly developed markets where mobile broadband is roughly ubiquitous, but this can be problematic in developing markets.

It is interesting to note that, at the moment, applications seem to be the driving force behind the mobile site. The average user already uses up to 30 applications per month, and more than 250,000 applications are broadcast per year … There may be an overload point from the user’s point of view. At this point, it is possible to imagine that if there are well-designed mobile websites, users will move away from apps and return to browsing and individual sites to experience their online experience. Subsequently, applications could become “launchers” of mobile websites.

In Conclusion

The mobile site offers an important opportunity for entrepreneurs. Mobile applications are relatively inexpensive and easy to produce. Choosing the right approach to development is essential to the good experience. By understanding the differences between hybrid, native and responsive, you can make the right decision for your mobile marketing project.

Lenovo K8 Note India Launch Set for Today: Where to Watch Live Stream

Lenovo K8 Note India Launch Set for Today: Where to Watch Live Stream

  • Lenovo K8 Note is set to launch at 12pm IST
  • The company is holding the launch event in New Delhi
  • The smartphone will be an Amazon exclusive

The Lenovo K8 Note India launch is scheduled for 12pm IST on Wednesday in New Delhi, leaving just a few minutes before the device goes official. K8 Note is the follow-up to last year’s K6 Note, and Lenovo has been boasting of its performance and photography capabilities over the past few weeks. We also know that the Lenovo K8 Note will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box at launch, and that it will be using a stock Android build. Lenovo revealed this information to Gadgets 360 alongside its announcement that going forward it will abandon its Vibe Pure UI in favour of stock Android, a decision it came upon after listening to customer feedback.

Lenovo K8 Note launch live stream

The launch of Lenovo K8 Note will be live streamed on YouTube, and you can catch it right here. The launch is slated to start at 12pm, but as with any tech launch nowadays, expect a delay of a few minutes. For those unaware, the Lenovo K8 Note will be an Amazon exclusive at launch.

Just why Lenovo skipped the K7 Note moniker is not known, but the ‘8’ symbol may suggest the use of a dual camera setup. To recall, the Lenovo K6 Note only featured a single rear camera, which makes it even more likely for the next iteration to get a dual camera module.

Lenovo K8 Note specifications

While the official information surrounding the Lenovo K8 Note is scarce, a recent GeekBench listing revealed some key specifications of the upcoming ‘Killer Note’ model. As per the listing, the smartphone will run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and will be powered by a 1.4GHz MediaTek Helio X20 SoC, backed by 4GB of RAM. Both the processor and RAM are improvements over the K6 Note’s Snapdragon 430 SoC and 3GB of RAM.

Disney to Quit Netflix, Start Its Own Streaming Services for Movies and Live Sports

Disney to Quit Netflix, Start Its Own Streaming Services for Movies and Live Sports

  • Disney is launching its own streaming service
  • New service will include animated, live-action Disney & Pixar movies
  • Disney had already said it would be launching a streaming ESPN service

With new streaming services in the works, Disney is trying to set itself up for a future that’s largely been framed by Netflix: Providing the stuff you want to watch, when you want to watch it.

The Magic Kingdom is launching its own streaming service for its central Disney and Pixar brands and another for live sports. That would allow it to bypass the cable companies it relies on – and Netflix – to charge consumers directly for access to its popular movies and sporting events.

“They’re bringing the future forward. What they talked about were things that looked inevitable, at some point,” said Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Weiser. What’s less clear is if Disney will be able to make big bucks from it, he said.

This is important as the decline in cable households and the shift to smaller, cheaper bundles pressures the profitability of Disney’s cable networks. Fewer subscribers and fewer viewers mean less money. In the nine months through July 1, cable networks’ operating income fell 13 percent from the year before, to $4.12 billion.

Kid stuff
Starting in 2019, the only subscription streaming service with new animated and live-action Disney and Pixar movies will be the Magic Kingdom’s own app. That will include Toy Story 4 and the sequel to the huge hit Frozen. Older movies will be there too, as well as shows from the TV channels Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD, and original TV and films. That could be hugely attractive for families with young children in the US.

Disney is ending an exclusive earlier movie deal with Netflix, and the streaming giant’s shares tumbled in after-hours trading. Netflix today has grown into an entertainment juggernaut in its own right, however, as it focuses more on its own exclusive programming.

Netflix already seemed to be bracing for the potential loss of the Disney movie rights earlier this week when it announced its first-ever acquisition – the purchase of Millarworld , a comic book publishing company that will develop films and kids shows based on its portfolio of character.

Disney might bring more of its properties – particularly its Marvel superheroes and the Star Warsfranchise – under its wing, and could even offer them as separate streaming services. CEO Robert Iger said Disney is considering whether it should continue licensing Marvel and Star Wars movies to outside services like Netflix, move them into the Disney app or develop individual services for them.

The Disney service will be available in “multiple markets” outside the US as well, taking advantage of Disney’s global name recognition.

Disney had already said it would be launching a streaming ESPN service. It’s not meant to compete with the company’s TV channels.

The sports service is coming in early 2018, a little later than previously announced, and will air baseball, hockey and soccer games, tennis matches and college sports through ESPN’s popular mobile app. Notably, ESPN will not be streaming pro football or basketball, at least initially.

Customers will also be able to buy fuller streaming packages from the baseball, hockey and soccer leagues, and watch them on the ESPN app.

“Ultimately, we envision this will become a dynamic sports marketplace that will grow and be increasingly customizable, allowing sports fans to pick and choose content that reflects their personal interests,” Iger said on a conference call with analysts.

Disney will have to be careful that it doesn’t transfer too much sports programming from its TV channels to the app. Getting the balance wrong could upset cable companies and weigh on the price they pay Disney for ESPN, Weiser said.

The back end
To roll out its streaming services, The Walt Disney Company will take majority control of BAMTech, a streaming arm of Major League Baseball spun off last year from Baseball Advanced Media, for $1.58 billion. When the deal closes, Disney will own 75 percent of BAMTech, up from the 33 percent stake it acquired for $1 billion as part of an agreement announced last year.

The acquisition and the new services will be “an entirely new growth strategy” for Disney, Iger said.

The new streaming services will likely “accelerate the erosion” of Disney’s TV networks, especially if other major cable networks make similar moves, said Moody’s analyst Neil Begley.

But Iger argues that BAMTech gives Disney “optionality” if the cable ecosystem changes further, Iger said on a conference call with analysts Tuesday. If there’s greater “erosion” – say, if more people drop cable bundles or choose cheaper bundles without key Disney channels – the company has more ways to get its entertainment directly to customers, Iger said.

He said there are no current plans to sell the Disney or ESPN TV channels directly to customers on the apps.

But having a direct relationship with customers tells Disney exactly what they’re watching, giving it powerful tools and information that could help feed decision-making and, on the sports side, sell advertising.

Google Offered to Buy Snapchat Parent for $30 Billion: Report

Google Offered to Buy Snapchat Parent for $30 Billion: Report

  • The offer was part of an informal dialogue between the two companies
  • An offer to the tune of $30 billion continues to be on the table
  • Snap went public in March this year

Search engine giant Google had offered $30 billion (roughly Rs. 1,91,044 crores) to buy Snap – the parent company of popular messaging app Snapchat – in 2016 and a similar offer is still open, a media report said.

Google had held informal dialogue with Snap and floated an offer of $30 billion before the latter’s last funding round, said a report in Business Insider on Thursday.

“One person claimed Google and Snap also had discussions about a potential buyout just ahead of Snap’s initial public offering earlier this year, and that an offer in the ballpark of $30 billion has continued to be on the table since the IPO. Chatter that Snap passed up a chance to sell to Google for at least twice its current value could be especially painful for investors and employees grappling with the company’s sinking stock,” the report notes.

Snap’s CEO Evan Spiegel, who is widely considered as being independent, apparently did not show interest in selling his firm to Google or anybody else.

Spiegel also values running Snap in Southern California and outside of Silicon Valley, where Alphabet – Google’s parent company is headquartered.

Earlier, in 2013, Google was rumoured to have been tried to acquire Snapchat for $4 billion after Spiegel refused an offer from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the report added.

Snap is set to announce earnings report next week, its second since going public at $17 just four months ago.

Incorporate Your Finest Design Examples

The key to creating an excellent portfolio is remembering that quality wins over quantity every time. Just because you have worked on several projects, doesn’t mean that you should include all of them. Likely, not every project you worked on was fantastic. Take time to go through all your work and pick out only the ones that you feel are impeccable. Select works that exhibit the diversity of your experience and ability. It is also a good idea to include only the most recent of your samples. This will ensure that your portfolio accurately reflects your current expertise and skills. If you are just starting out and do not have much work to display, you can include mock-ups, personal design projects and the assignments that you did in school. This way you will also be able to express your unique vision and style.

Include Details

Do not upload pictures on your website just because they look good. Each picture must have a story to tell. Your design must always give the viewers a sense behind the work and what it has helped the organization to achieve. The story that you tell through your design must be able to express your role, the process that you adopted and its success. Be to-the-point so that people will have a reason to hire you. You might also consider creating a case study for each of the pieces. However, do not include it all on the same page. Create an option where the users can click to gather additional details. Your story must have a great beginning and an interesting conclusion.

A call-to-action button on each page will help accomplish your goal. For instance, if you want to get a new job, you could include a “Hire Me” button. This call-to-action button can be linked to your portfolio, blog or the contact page.

Highlight the Job You Want

It is always a good idea to highlight the job that you are interested in. Focusing on a niche that you are good at, or are interested in, can prove to be highly beneficial for you. This makes it easier for the client to anticipate your needs. For instance, if you specialize in a particular area of design, don’t forget to highlight it. It might be possible that you are transitioning to a new field, then you need to isolate any prior work and highlight only what you wish to do now.

Keep Updating as You Keep Improving

To maintain an impressive portfolio, reflect your talent well and keep updating the showcase as often as possible. Be sure to get rid of the pieces that you feel no longer reflect your best work.

As you keep on working for new clients, you are also getting the chance to create wonderful pieces for your portfolio. Even if you feel that the project isn’t very motivating, you must be sure that quality work is ensured each time. This will provide you with better opportunities in the future that can aid in further expanding your portfolio.

Website Optimization

No matter how great your website looks, it isn’t going to help you in any way if it isn’t optimized. By optimizing the images and the site as a whole, you make it easier for the audience to connect with you. Your site will rank higher in the search engine results and that helps to grab better opportunities.

You can optimize the images by resizing or compressing them. There are several tools that can help you with that. Ensure that your site loads quickly and the audience knows how to get in touch with you. Try including a contact form on each page. Learn the basics of SEO and implement them. You should notice that your site has started performing much better.

Be Straightforward

It is crucial to understand that no one is going to waste time in dealing with portfolios that have a complicated design or navigation. What you need to do is be absolutely straightforward with your website. When a prospective client visits your website, they should see only your best work.

Never try to slow the visitors by trying something that you have never done before. Choose something that is simple and yet elegant. Also, make sure that your site works perfectly well on all the popular browsers. If your site takes too much time to load or if your website appears to be broken, then there is an excellent chance that the lost viewers will never return.

Once you have designed your portfolio, remember to promote it so that people know about it. For clients seeking design talent, you have to bear in mind that it is your portfolio that shows that you are a professional. It is through your portfolio that the people will know that you have the ability to create amazing designs that will help their businesses achieve top goals.

Think of your portfolio as a tool for promoting your work and soon you will be able to impress potential clients.

Demand for security gadgets shoots up after trader’s murder

Taking no chances: CC cameras on display at a shop in Visakhapatnam .   | Photo Credit: C.V.Subrahmanyam

Enquiries pouring in from residents, says a shop owner

Post the sensational murder of businessman Vikram Dhamija and attack on his wife and his driver at their apartment on Beach Road area, there is sharp increase in footfalls at the firms selling security gadgets and security agencies.

The businessman was attacked last Monday afternoon by six hired assailants from Jharkhand, who were given the contract to extort money from the deceased by manager of the apartment Ch. Satyanarayana Murthy. Though Murthy and two others have been arrested, the gang of Jharkhand is yet to be caught. But the murder has created panic among residents, especially in the posh localitiess, and a number of them have approached the security firms to install different types of security gadgets in their complex.

Ms. Sujatha, owner of a firm selling the gadgets, said the business has improved over the last two years, as awareness among the people have increased, but in the last one week after the murder of the businessman, it has shot up by about 40 %.

Apart from CC (close circuit) cameras other gadgets such as video calling bell and video phones are on demand and as the enquiries have suddenly shot up there is a shortage in the market, as of now, she said.

The CC cameras available in the market are basically are of two varieties: the HD (high definition) version and the IP (Internet protocol) version. While in the case of HD cameras the cost varies from ₹ 2000 to ₹ 15000 per camera, in the case of IP cameras in ranges from ₹ 3000 to ₹ 20,000.

According to Mr. Srinivas, who has been dealing with security gadgets for the last one decade, the cameras come in a pack of four and they multiply by four, as the recorders support a minimum of four cameras and again multiplies by four.

A basic set of four in the case of the HD variety may range from ₹ 10,000 to ₹ 22,000 and for IP it may range from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 30,000, said Ms. Sujatha. Coming to the memory the basic four-camera HD version has a memory of 1 TB (terabyte) with a capacity to store for 25 days, in case of IP it is TB for 10 days.

But both security gadget sellers said a lot depends on the positioning of the cameras. “Apart from positioning, the lighting factor in the cellar or corridors should also be considered,” said Mr. Srinivas.

DCP (Law and Order) K. Fakeerappa said it is high time that people realise the security aspect and abide by the AP Public Safety Act-2013, the implementation of which is still a long way to go.

The security agencies that supply security guards also have been receiving unprecedented enquiries in the last few days. “We have been receiving fresh enquiries as well as from our old customers, who are demanding new and young guards,” said a owner of a security agency.
