WhatsApp Starts Allowing Sharing of All File Types on Android, iPhone, Windows Phone: Reports

WhatsApp has long been used as a medium to share photos, videos, and even Word docs. And for those files that weren’t supported on WhatsApp, users tend to go the long route by uploading them first on the cloud, and then sharing the link for download. There are several other workarounds, including third-party apps, to get your unsupported file from one sender to another, but it appears WhatsApp no longer wants you to use those. The company is said to be testing support for all types of file transfers (including archives) on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone with a limited number of users, removing any hindrance of file sharing on WhatsApp.

WABetaInfo spotted this roll out, and claims that it’s a phased one. While some users in countries like India, Japan, Kuwait, Sri Lanka have reported that the support has arrived, there are several other users that do not see it still. However, WhatsApp can be expected to roll this feature out to everyone in the due course of time. The file sharing limit is at 128MB on iOS, 64MB on Web, and 100MB on Android, WABetaInfo reports.This new feature will now allow you to share video in a wide variety of formats, MP3 songs, or even APK files for that matter on WhatsApp. As of now, it’s now certain what type of file-checking system WhatsApp has put into place to prevent transfer of malicious or booby-trapped files. The other neat addition noted by the tipster is that with the new sharing feature, WhatsApp also allows you to send uncompressed photos and videos without compromising on resolution, but the ceiling limit is too low for high-quality video clips of sufficient length. Presumably, this cap has been enforced to not overwhelm WhatsApp’s servers with huge files.
WhatsApp is also tipped to be working on a recall feature that allows you to undo a message sent to someone, and is also working on bringing the new Status feature to WhatsApp Web.

Facebook is launching a UK programme to train and fund local organizations to combat extremist material online, as Internet companies attempt to clamp down on hate speech and violent content on their services.

Facebook, which outlined new efforts to remove extremist and terrorism content from its social media platform last week, will launch the Online Civil Courage Initiative in the UK on Friday, the company said in a statement.

The new initiative will train non-governmental organizations to help them monitor and respond to extremist content and create a dedicated support desk so they can communicate directly with Facebook, the company said.

“There is no place for hate or violence on Facebook,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer. “We use technology like AI to find and remove terrorist propaganda, and we have teams of counterterrorism experts and reviewers around the world working to keep extremist content off our platform.”

The British government has stepped up attacks on Silicon Valley Internet companies for not acting quickly enough to take down extremist online propaganda and fostering “safe places” where extremists can breed following a string of attacks in recent months in London and Manchester.

 

Facebook, Alphabet Inc’s Google and Twitter have responded by saying they have made heavy investments and employed thousands of people to take down hate speech and violent content over the past two years. Security analysts say the efforts have dramatically reduced the use of these platforms for jihadist recruitment efforts, although more work needs to be done.

Prime Minister Theresa May has sought to enlist British public opinion to force the US Internet players to work more closely with the government rather than proposing new legislation or policies to assert greater control over the web.

Earlier this week, May urged fellow European Union leaders at a meeting in Brussels to join her in putting pressure on tech companies to ‘rid terrorist material from the internet in all our languages’.

She called for the Internet companies to shift from reactively removing content when they are notified of it, towards greater use of automatic detection and removal tools – and ultimately preventing it from appearing on their platforms in the first place.

Attleboro High students win web design contest

ATTLEBORO

Computer information students from Attleboro High School dominated a recent web design competition sponsored by Bristol Community College.

Two-student teams of Attleboro juniors won first and second place in the competition that attracted students from throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.

Zion Armour and William Harmelink won the challenge with classmates Colby Goyette and Benjamin Tibnan coming in close behind.

At class on Wednesday, Armour and Harmelink said they learned a lot from the program.

They said the challenge was to use different computer languages to write codes to replicate a series of eight websites they were shown.

“At first I was leery of it, but it was definitely a learning experience,” Armour said.

Harmelink said he knew most of the languages he was required to use, but he did not consider himself fluent in them until the competition.

Teacher Frank Balcarcel said he started entering students in the competition as soon as he came to Attleboro High four years ago after seeing its benefits at another school.

He said knowing how to write codes and create websites prepares students for a number of jobs in the field.

Principal Bill Runey said the wins in the competition reflect highly on the career and technical education department at Attleboro High.

“Our CTE program continues to be a vehicle for our students to have relevant experiences. Mr. Balcarcel has provided them with an engaging opportunity that has prepared them to be competitive beyond the walls of AHS,” he said.

Indian-origin UK graduate wins £2 million software deal

Hardeep ‘Harry’ Jawanda, a former England hockey player, has secured a £2 million deal with a global education technology firm that will see his software spread across the UK and Australasia.

Jawanda, CEO and co-founder of the Wambiz private social network, did his BSc in information technology management for business at Birmingham City University, graduating with first-class honours in 2009.

His company’s intellectual property rights and distribution network have been acquired by the Tribal Group, which provides services and software to the higher education sector. The deal includes distribution in education markets across the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Established in 2013 by Jawanda (30) and business partner Andrew West, Wambiz provides a safe means for students to connect, communicate and collaborate with peers, teachers and institutions in an engaging yet controlled manner.

The university said in a release that with young people increasingly unresponsive to traditional communications such as texts and emails, Wambiz has the same look and feel as the social media platforms students are using every day in their personal lives.

This results in greatly increased student engagement outside of the classroom, but at the same time does not blur the line between social and school life, safeguarding the professional integrity of teachers and student welfare.

Jawanda said: “The deal with Tribal is our largest to date and it was important for us to find a partner that understands education and could take our solution deeper into that market…Tribal has the resources to extend and grow this functionality in the education markets within their territories whilst allowing Wambiz to focus on the rest of the world.”

Tesla Loses Autopilot Software Chief After Less Than Six Months

Tesla Inc.’s team developing self-driving car capabilities lost a top engineer hired less than six months ago from Apple Inc., adding to a spate of executive shakeups at tech companies competing to put fully autonomous vehicles on the road.

Chris Lattner, who left Apple in January and had been vice president of the carmaker’s Autopilot software, was the hire Tesla touted earlier this year after losing Sterling Anderson, the head of its Autopilot program. Since August, Tesla, Uber Technologies Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo have each lost executives who led their respective self-driving efforts.

“In the end, Elon and I agreed that he and I did not work well together and that I should leave, so I did,” Lattner wrote in an update to his resume. In listing his contributions to Tesla, he wrote that the Autopilot team was in the midst of a challenging hardware transition during his time with the company and struggling with attrition.

Turnover is proving a challenge for companies in a fierce war for the engineering talent needed to develop autonomous vehicles. The auto industry and its regulators are counting on the technology to help make significant reductions in crashes that lead to tens of thousands of injuries and deaths in the U.S. every year.

Talent War

Uber last month fired self-driving car executive Anthony Levandowski, yielding to mounting pressure in its court fight with Waymo after a judge concluded he took thousands of confidential files from the Alphabet unit. Anderson, Tesla’s former head of Autopilot, and Chris Urmson, who for years led Waymo’s self-driving efforts before leaving the company in August, are now running their own startup, Aurora Innovation. A total of 34 companies now have permits to test self-driving cars on California roads.

As traditional automakers, technology companies and startups look to break through with self-driving cars, engineers with expertise in hardware, software or artificial intelligence have an abundance of options. Actual experience leading teams and building autonomous systems is rare, said Sophie Thomas, a principal at recruiting firm Riviera Partners.

“Very few humans on the face of the planet have this skill set,” said Thomas, whose San Francisco-based company does executive-level searches for autonomous driving companies. “Add in the pressure of building a system that can work and won’t kill people on the street — it’s a rare find.”

Tesla Turnover

At Tesla, Jim Keller will take overall responsibility for Autopilot hardware and software, according to the company’s statement. Keller joined from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. in January 2016 and also worked previously for Apple.

As one major executive leaves Palo Alto, California-based Tesla and its Autopilot group, another is joining from OpenAI, the artificial intelligence nonprofit venture backed by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. Andrej Karpathy has joined the carmaker as director of AI and Autopilot Vision, reporting directly to Musk and working closely with Keller. Tesla is building its image-sensing technology in-house after parting ways with Jerusalem-based Mobileye NV last summer.

The churn at Tesla goes beyond Autopilot. Shortly after the company announced it would lose Chief Financial Officer Jason Wheeler, Bloomberg News reported in March that more than two dozen executives have left the company within the past year, including vice presidents of finance, communications, regulatory affairs, production, manufacturing, products and programs. Tesla announced last month it hired Gabrielle Toledano as chief people officer — the top human resources role — at the company that now has more than 30,000 employees.

Tesla’s approach with Autopilot has been to field a suite of driver-assistance features that are continuously improved via over-the-air software updates and help build toward more advanced autonomous capabilities. Tesla has said all cars now being made at its factory in Fremont, California, including the forthcoming Model 3, have the hardwareneeded to one day be fully self-driving.

Reaching that capability with the Autopilot system, sold as a $3,000 option for Model S sedans and Model X sport utility vehicles, will require extensive software validation and regulatory approvals. Musk has vowed to demonstrate a fully autonomous Los Angeles-to-New-York cross-country trip by the end of this year.

(Phys.org)—A team of researchers form the U.S., Denmark and France has created a report regarding the creation and use of software meant to give exploratory robots in space more autonomy. In their paper published in the journal Science Robotics, the team describes the software, called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS), and how well it performed on the Mars rover Curiosity.

Because of their limited computing power and distance from the Earth, space scientists believe that it would be advantageous for exploratory robots to have the ability to select which things to study. It would also allow for more research to be done when a robot is not able to communicate with Earth, such as when it is on the opposite face of a planet. Without such a system, a robot would have to scan a region, photograph it, send the photographic images back to Earth and then wait for instructions on what to do. With such a system, a robot such as Curiosity could scan the horizon, pick an object to study and then drive over and study it. This approach would save a lot of time, allowing the robot to study more objects before its useful lifespan expires. Because of that, NASA commissioned a team to create such software, which eventually became AEGIS. The software was tested and then uploaded to Curiosity in May of 2016 and was used 54 times over the next 11 months.

The software allows the rover to control what has been dubbed the ChemCam, which is a device that is used to study rocks or other geologic features—a laser is fired at a target and then sensors measure the gases that occur as a result.

The researchers report that they found the system to be 93 percent accurate compared to 24 percent without its use. The software, they claim, saved many hours of mission time, which was used for engaging in other useful activities such as studying meteorite content. They also report that the software allowed for an increase in ChemCam targeting from 256 per day to 327, which meant that more data was collected in the same amount of time.

Abstract
Limitations on interplanetary communications create operations latencies and slow progress in planetary surface missions, with particular challenges to narrow–field-of-view science instruments requiring precise targeting. The AEGIS (Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science) autonomous targeting system has been in routine use on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover since May 2016, selecting targets for the ChemCam remote geochemical spectrometer instrument. AEGIS operates in two modes; in autonomous target selection, it identifies geological targets in images from the rover’s navigation cameras, choosing for itself targets that match the parameters specified by mission scientists the most, and immediately measures them with ChemCam, without Earth in the loop. In autonomous pointing refinement, the system corrects small pointing errors on the order of a few milliradians in observations targeted by operators on Earth, allowing very small features to be observed reliably on the first attempt. AEGIS consistently recognizes and selects the geological materials requested of it, parsing and interpreting geological scenes in tens to hundreds of seconds with very limited computing resources. Performance in autonomously selecting the most desired target material over the last 2.5 kilometers of driving into previously unexplored terrain exceeds 93% (where ~24% is expected without intelligent targeting), and all observations resulted in a successful geochemical observation. The system has substantially reduced lost time on the mission and markedly increased the pace of data collection with ChemCam. AEGIS autonomy has rapidly been adopted as an exploration tool by the mission scientists and has influenced their strategy for exploring the rover’s environment.

Risk-Based Thinking in Planning (6.0): Using the Business Operating System Approach

The quality operating system promised and has delivered the following:
• Cross-functional management
• Visual management
• Process orientation
• Continual improvement teams

Omnex worked with Ford’s tier-one suppliers around the world in both the manufacturing and service sectors successfully implementing this process. Disciplined management meetings coupled with the visual analysis of key measurables (KPIs), Pareto diagrams, data-drive action plans, and Paynter charts to measure impact, helped these organizations improve tremendously. Ford, working with Omnex, also developed a quality operating system questionnaire that focused on aligning goals and objectives with KPIs and identifying key processes and process measures for key areas of customer focus.

QS-9000, ISO 9001:2000, ISO 9001:2015, and the high level structure

From 1995 to 2016, Omnex modified the quality operating system methodology, adjusting the approach to adapt to the requirements of evolving quality management system (QMS) standards. As a result, Omnex QMS, enterprise management system (EMS), and other management system implementations always included the quality operating system, renamed as the business operating system, or BOS, to support strategic planning and performance monitoring and improvement. BOS has always been the way Omnex fulfilled customer focus, process orientation, measurement of KPIs, management review, and continual improvement. BOS is crucial for any management system implementation. BOS is the essential process needed to fulfill the key requirements of management system standards, an ideal solution to how you need a process to fulfill the requirements (“shalls”) of ISO 9001 and similar standards.”

The BOS methodology and ISO 9001:2015

The ISO 9001:2015 QMS standard and the high level structure together focuses on “interested party expectations” and the “context” of the organization. Why focus on interested parties? The simple answer is that organizations need to satisfy more than just their direct customers’ requirements to stay in business. Additionally, organizations need to evolve beyond the “one size fits all” mode of thinking. Companies need to go beyond “one set of KPIs” for the entire organization, or “one strategy” for the entire business, or “one QMS.” With proper implementation, interested party expectations and context will help organizations identify KPIs, key processes, and action plans that fit the organization, whether it’s a manufacturing site or a design center. This is why organizations identify internal and external issues and interested party expectations, to determine how best to succeed in the environment their organization is situated.

The BOS process, as shown above, illustrates how goals and objectives are set based on the context, mission/vision/values, and interested party expectations of the organization. The goals are then translated to metrics via KPIs that measure performance with goal lines that identify the objectives. Finally, the KPIs are fulfilled via processes that help deliver the results. In other words, results are the outcome of the processes performing well. When processes improve, they drive results, helping organizations achieve their goals and objectives. The goals and objectives, in turn, help ensure that the enterprise achieves interested party expectations and the mission/vision/values of the organization.

Risk-based thinking

While implementing this process within hundreds of organizations over the past 20+ years, Omnex has understood that the improvement actions always addressed process variation in organization. In other words, the process risk was always related to the capabilities of the processes to deliver on the results reflected in the KPIs of the organization. Management system standards, via the high level structure, are requiring the organization to de-risk the planning process. In other words, the risk-based thinking in ISO 9001’s Planning (6.0), for instance, helps reduce the risk of management not meeting goals and objectives. If we can conduct a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to reduce design and manufacturing risk, why not conduct an exercise for identifying and managing enterprise risk?

Omnex suggests a disciplined process that identifies processes that affect a specific enterprise KPI and then identifying how the process can fail, including determining impact or severity combined with likelihood. The effect of the process failure on the business, either in business loss or business impact, and its likelihood defines risk.

Omnex uses two different risk forms—one simple and, when justified, one more-rigorous approach. See figure 2 below:

Implementing BOS

BOS implementation is streamlined to a six-step process as follows:

Step 1: Determine organizational context and interested parties
In this step, the facilitator interacts with the top management team to identify the key internal and external issues.

Step 2: Align policy, mission, vision, and values
The second step reviews and ensures that the policy (quality, environmental, or other), mission, vision, and value statement are aligned with the context of the organization.

Step 3: Identified interested party expectations are listed, grouped, and rated.
The rating is based on potential impact on the business failing to meet critical expectations. Rated from high (immediate business impact/dollar impact) to low (no impact to the business). This prioritization is applied to each expectation, always looking through the eyes of the interested party. This allows the organization to focus on those expectations most strategically critical to the business. Even employee expectations and the loss of key employees translates to business loss. See figure 3:

Step 4: Establish strategic objectives
Goals and objectives are set around the grouped categories since they were deemed to be most important by interested parties. Omnex uses benchmarking to set short-term and long-term objectives in the BOS process.

Step 5: Identify key processes and KPIs
Once the goals and objectives are set, the key processes and KPIs are determined based on a process called alignment charting. In organizations that already have objectives and KPIs, the facilitator can skip step 4.

Step 6 and Step 7: Conduct risk-based thinking and select improvement projects
The alignment charts are studied and the process variation, based on process KPIs, is determined to enable identifying specific actions to reduce risk. These actions become projects championed by designated process owners.

Linux vs. Windows Server OS Comparison

A comparison between Linux and Windows while selecting the server operating system is like being in stalemate while playing the chess game where the outcome is unpredictable. Various versions of the Microsoft—from Windows—and the Linux-based operating systems are available in plenty today. But deciding the best option is a tougher task, rather, finding the right solution that fits the organizational requirements is easier.

Linux

Stability is one of the most important aspects for consideration while choosing a server system. Linux systems are widely renowned for its ability to run without failure for several years. Moreover, Linux crashes are too rare, which means there are really fewer probabilities for a downtime. Linux also handles a large number of processes running at once.

Unlike other systems, Linux servers typically never require a rebooting. Almost all Linux configuration changes can be done while the system is running and without affecting unrelated services. The option of defragmenting also is never required in a Linux system.

Gazing at the security aspects, Linux is innately more secure than its competitors, as Linux, which is based on UNIX, was designed from the start to be a multiuser operating system. Only the administrator, or root user, has administrative privileges, and fewer users and applications have permission to access the kernel or each other. That keeps everything modular and protected. On Linux, the system admin always has a clear view of the file system and is always in control.

Another added advantage of Linux is that the system is slim, trim, flexible, and scalable. It performs admirably on just about any computer, regardless of processor or machine architecture. The Linux server operating system can be reconfigured for running all the applications that are based on the organizations requirements, thus further reducing memory requirements, improving performance and keeping things even simpler. Moreover, the total cost of ownership is free with Linux, as the OS is completely free of cost as well as Open-Source.

Windows

The Windows operating system from Microsoft, with over 75 percent of the OS market share is widely used among organizations due to its standardized features and user friendliness.
